Monitors and Semaphores in Operating System.

Now, This is most important topic that might ask during interview session, its better to clear all your doubts before going for interview , I am your friend going to help to clear this concept.

Reasons for using Monitors and Semaphores

The reason that semaphores and monitors are needed is because multi-threaded applications (like Microsoft Word, Excel, etc) must control how threads access shared resources. This is known as thread synchronization – which is absolutely necessary in a multi-threaded application to ensure that threads work well with each other. If applications do not control the threads then it may result in corruption of data and other problems.

Are we Familiar with this ?

Actually we all use this constraints while implementing synchronization in  multi-threaded Systems.
Monitors and semaphores are both programming constructs used to accomplish thread synchronization. Whether you use a monitor or a semaphore depends on what your language or system supports.

Now we start with one by one ,

What is a Monitor?

A monitor is a set of multiple routines which are protected by a mutual exclusion lock. None of the routines in the monitor can be executed by a thread until that thread acquires the lock. This means that only ONE thread can execute within the monitor at a time. Any other threads must wait for the thread that’s currently executing to give up control of the lock.
However, a thread can actually suspend itself inside a monitor and then wait for an event to occur. If this happens, then another thread is given the opportunity to enter the monitor. The thread that was suspended will eventually be notified that the event it was waiting for has now occurred, which means it can wake up and reacquire the lock.

What is a Semaphore?

A semaphore is a simpler construct than a monitor because it’s just a lock that protects a shared resource – and not a set of routines like a monitor. The application must acquire the lock before using that shared resource protected by a semaphore.

Example of a Semaphore – a Mutex

Well known example for Semaphore is Mutex.
A mutex is the most basic type of semaphore, and mutex is short for mutual exclusion. In a mutex, only one thread can use the shared resource at a time. If another thread wants to use the shared resource, it must wait for the owning thread to release the lock.

Differences between Monitors and Semaphores

Both Monitors and Semaphores are used for the same purpose – thread synchronization. But, monitors are simpler to use than semaphores because they handle all of the details of lock acquisition and release. An application using semaphores has to release any locks a thread has acquired when the application terminates – this must be done by the application itself. If the application does not do this, then any other thread that needs the shared resource will not be able to proceed.
Another difference when using semaphores is that every routine accessing a shared resource has to explicitly acquire a a lock before using the resource. This can be easily forgotten when coding the routines dealing with multithreading . Monitors, unlike semaphores, automatically acquire the necessary locks.

Is there a cost to using a monitor or semaphore?

Yes, there is a cost associated with using synchronization constructs like monitors and semaphores. And, this cost is the time that is required to get the necessary locks whenever a shared resource is accessed.

Pakistan blocks 800 web pages over 'blasphemy'

Its real news ....
Maktmin makes you in touch with world..

Pakistan has blocked 800 web pages and URLs to limit access to "blasphemous" material, extending a crackdown that has already banned access to Facebook and YouTube, an official said Saturday.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) banned access to Facebook, YouTube and other links, which included restricted access to Wikipedia, in view of what it called "growing sacrilegious content" this week.

"At least 800 individual web pages and URLs have been blocked since the government's orders to shut Facebook and YouTube," Wahaj us Siraj, a spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan told AFP.

Siraj's remarks came hours after the Facebook user who organised an "Everyone Draw Mohammed Day" competition to promote "freedom of expression" evidently took down the page along with a separate blog about the campaign.

The competition sparked angry protests in Pakistan, a conservative Muslim country of 170 million, although members of a well-educated, moderate elite expressed disappointment on the blanket ban on the wildly popular websites.

Islam strictly prohibits the depiction of any prophet as blasphemous and Muslims all over the world staged angry protests over the publication of satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in European newspapers in 2006.

Siraj said that any decision to restore Facebook and YouTube access would be taken by the PTA.

The offending Facebook page attracted 105,000 fans -- and five pages of crude manipulated pictures and caricatures. Pages denouncing the competition and calling for a boycott of the May 20 competition attracted far more fans.

PTA spokesman Khurram Mehran told AFP on Saturday that the authority would lift the ban only after receiving instructions from the government.

"We are just an implementing authority and we have to act on the orders from the government," Mehran said.

Pakistan also briefly banned YouTube in February 2008 in a similar protest against "blasphemous" cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

World Largest Virus Found

This Virus Does not Related to Computers pr Network but it related o our Body, Yes the Largest Virus of our Body has been Found be Careful of it.
MaktMin Larget Virus
A giant virus that lurks inside amoebas and may cause pneumonia in humans has been spotted by scientists.

"Mimivirus" is the biggest virus found so far, and was discovered in a sample taken from a water cooling tower in Bradford, UK, in 1992.
It has at least 900 genes, an enormous number for a virus, and its size is more like that of a bacterium.
It can be spotted through a good optical microscope - most viruses can only be visualised by electron microscopes.
In terms of DNA, it is approximately a fifth bigger than the virus previously considered to be the largest in the world.

No SARS link
Although it has been linked to pneumonia in humans, it is in no way related to the SARS virus currently sweeping the Far East.

A report about the discovery was published on Thursday in the journal Science.
Amoebas, large single-celled organisms, are commonly found in air-conditioning systems in large buildings, and often harbour various bacteria and viruses inside them, which can go on to infect people working in those buildings.
MaktMin Larget Virus
The researchers who examined Mimivirus, from the National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris, France, said that blood samples from people with pneumonia had revealed antibodies for this virus, suggesting that their immune systems had come into contact with it at some point.
They believe it is a virus because it lacks certain genes which are universal to bacteria - but contains others which are known to have key functions in viruses.
The virus, while it has some genetic similarities to the family of viruses that includes smallpox virus, has now been classed as the first of a completely new virus family, the Mimiviridae.

This post is just to ensure you all about the World Largest Virus

Victorinox Offers Mission Impossible Secure USB Drives

Victorinox plans to add a secure USB memory stick with Mission Impossible-style features to its Swiss Army knives. The Victorinox Secure devices will have a fingerprint scanner that can detect life, and will self-destruct if the case is cracked. Victorinox is offering $150,000 to anyone who can breach the Victorinox Secure layers of security.

Victorinox intends to add a USB memory stick to its lineup of iconic tools that fold out from the casing of the company's popular Swiss Army knives. The hook that Victorinox announced Friday is that the new products will also sport high-tech security features aimed at preventing the devices from being accessed by others if lost or stolen. "Life is becoming more digital every day, and yet people do so little to protect their data ," said the new product line's designer, Martin Kuster. "The world's most common password is '12345' -- and even encryption can be broken, given time."
Single-Chip Technology
The new memory-stick devices from Victorinox will even sport a fingerprint scanner linked to a heat and oxygen sensor capable of determining whether the user's finger is still attached to a living person, the company said. Also on tap is a Mission Impossible-style self-destruct mechanism that will fry the device's internal circuitry in the event that anyone attempts to physically crack the case.
The available memory aboard each USB-enabled knife is expected to range from 8GB to 32GB, depending on the model selected. To prevent Victorinox Secure devices from attracting the attention of airport security workers, road warriors will have the option of detaching the memory drive from the knife's housing when traveling by air.
Victorinox Secure devices integrate single-chip technology that eliminates the need for external and accessible lines between the different coding/security steps, the company said. The data on this chip is also secured through the use of AES256 encryption -- the same 256-bit cypher that the U.S. government has adopted for securing sensitive information .
In addition to the USB drive, the new lineup of Swiss Army knives will include a retractable ballpoint pen, a blade , scissors, a nail file with screwdriver, and a key ring. Frequent fliers in need of the whole kit and caboodle can always place their units in checked baggage.

A Challenge To Hackers
Victorinox is so confident that its new lineup of secure memory devices is uncrackable that it offered a $150,000 prize last week to anyone who can breach the new product's layers of security protection. Though no one claimed the prize, the jury is still out on whether the product will be adopted wholesale by enterprises.
Pendrive Security
"It's a cool product that will capture attention," said David Reinsel, group vice president of storage and semiconductor research at IDC. But "adoption en masse by corporations is quite another thing."
There's no doubt that data breaches are expensive for businesses in many ways, Reinsel noted. However, so is data on a computer that sits behind an encryption key that only the employee knows, he said.
"Hence the age-old issue -- corporations (most of them) want to control the encryption methodology and the keys," he said. "Any corporate solution would have to allow for some type of master key so that the company can get at a rogue employee's data."
The new Victorinox Secure devices will initially be launched in the United Kingdom, though Victorinox has yet to unveil a firm release date. Pricing is expected to range between $75 and $270, depending on the amount of memory in each model.
This is great enhance to our PD security and must be use in our day to day life to protect our PD and Data.

Use Hibernate and Standby to Conserve Batteries

The Hibernate function in Windows XP Professional can make the batteries in your laptop computer last longer.

Windows XP supports the industry standard power management technology known as the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), which enables the operating system to control power to your computer and peripheral devices. The power management features in Windows XP include Hibernate and Standby. Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer. When you turn on power, your files and documents are open on your desktop exactly as you left them. Standby reduces the power consumption of your computer by cutting power to hardware components you are not using. Standby can cut power to peripheral devices, your monitor, even your hard drive, but maintains power to your computer’s memory so you don’t lose your work.

Power Management Performance

Windows XP wakes from Hibernate faster than any earlier version of Windows. So you can preserve your batteries without taking time to close all your files and shut down, and then restart and open all your files when you’re ready to work again. If you need to leave your computer, you can just leave it. Windows XP can automatically put your computer into Hibernate mode after a specified period of inactivity. Or Windows XP can detect when your batteries are running low, and then automatically put your computer in Hibernate mode to save your work before the battery fails. To put your computer into hibernation, you must have a computer that is set up by the manufacturer to support this option

To automatically put your computer into hibernation

You must be logged on to your computer with an owner account in order to complete this procedure.

1. Open Power Options in Control Panel. (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.)

2. Click the Hibernate tab, select the Enable hibernate support check box, and then click Apply.

If the Hibernate tab is unavailable, your computer does not support this feature.

3. Click the APM tab, click Enable Advanced Power Management support, and then click Apply.

The APM tab is unavailable on ACPI–compliant computers. ACPI automatically enables Advanced Power Management, which disables the APM tab.

4. Click the Power Schemes tab, and then select a time period in System hibernates. Your computer hibernates after it has been idle for the specified amount of time.

To manually put your computer into hibernation

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of either the Administrators or Power Users group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.

1. Open Power Options in Control Panel. (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.)

2. Click the Hibernate tab, and then select the Enable hibernate support check box.

If the Hibernate tab is not available, your computer does not support this feature.
3. Click OK to close the Power Options dialog box.

4. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. In the What do you want the computer to do drop-down list, click Hibernate.
If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional with Fast User Switching turned on, the Shut Down menu will present the options to Stand By, Turn Off, or Restart your computer. Hold down the Shift key, and the Stand By button will change to Hibernate.

WIN.COM HIDDEN PARAMETERS

WIN.COM is the Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface) command line executable,
located in C:\Windows (default)
Hidden Parameter :
Hidden parameter are not documented by Microsoft and is find by users threw experiments.

1.) win/W [Windows 95 and above ONLY]

win/W generates this message:

"Press any key to continue...
Pressing a key reboots the system back to Windows 95 (98)."

waiting for user input (key press), and then restarts the computer (warm reboot), restoring the original CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files in the root directory of the boot drive from CONFIG.WOS and AUTOEXEC.WOS (if any).

This is useful when the computer is restarted after interrupting a "single" mode MS-DOS session, because of this CONFIG.SYS line:
DOS=SINGLE
which does NOT allow Windows 95/98 GUI to load. This switch works ONLY if executed from the native/real/true MS-DOS mode OUTSIDE the Windows 95/98 GUI, NOT from WITHIN Windows in a DOS box/session.

2.)win/Z [Windows 95B OSR 2.1 and above ONLY]

win/Z automatically forces the ATX power supply to (soft-)power off the
computer ONLY on ATX motherboards, without prompting or waiting for input (key
press).
This switch works ONLY if executed from the native/real/true MS-DOS mode
OUTSIDE the Windows GUI, NOT from WITHIN Windows in a DOS prompt/box/session.

The cloud may not be the Internet

In our last newsletter we distinguished between public and private cloud computing and discussed some of the challenges associated with supporting both forms of cloud computing over a WAN. In this newsletter we will continue that discussion and will also discuss how IT organizations intend to respond to those challenges.

The case for virtualized WAN optimization controllers

As noted in the last newsletter, the increased use of both private and public cloud computing drives an increased reliance on the WAN. In the case of private cloud computing, this increased use of the WAN to access IT resources results in the need for IT organizations to implement WAN optimization controllers (WOC) functionality in their data centers and their remote offices. In the case of public cloud computing, this will drive the need for both the IT organization and the public cloud providers to implement WOC functionality. However, since WOCs are proprietary, both the IT organization and the public cloud provider must implement WOCs from the same vendor.

The need to have the WOC in the enterprise be the same as the WOC provided by the service provider is just one factor driving the trend to have service providers, both traditional network service providers and cloud computing service providers, provide WOC functionality as part of the overall service that is being delivered to the customer. Whether provided as part of a private or a public cloud computing solution, Application Delivery 2.0 WOCs will need to scale to support significantly more throughput and more sessions than do Application Delivery 1.0 WOCs.
Due to a variety of well-known issues (for example, packet loss at peering points, BGP's inability to choose the path with the lowest delay, the TCP slow start algorithm) the Internet often exhibits performance problems. As such, the Internet is not always the most appropriate WAN service to use to access cloud computing solutions. Our research indicates that when accessing public cloud services, IT organizations are only somewhat more likely to use the Internet than they are to use other WAN services. That research also indicates that when accessing private cloud services, IT organizations are notably more likely to use a WAN service other than the Internet than they are to use the Internet.

Get Almost Free Airtel 2Gb Pack For Just Rs 98

Tata Docomo, Reliance netconnect and now Airtel, all are fighting hard to gain market share in the GPRS section. The recent launch of Airtels new GPRS unlimited pack, in this competetive segments, speaks it all.

The ‘Ulimited package’ per say comes at Rs98 / month. When I was just about to say, very well priced and close my current reliance account, I noticed their fair usage policy, which says that we cannot exceed the 2Gb limit / month. Well honestly speaking not bad for those who want GPRS only on their mobile for minimal browsing. But for those who want to connect to and browse through the PC, I’s warn them to be careful.

There is a prerequisite that you need to activate Mobile office for your number and this can be done by dialing *567*11# , which will flash a confirmation message (yes it’ll be an IVR!). Do the Easy Reacharge part now, ie you can activate this plan by ‘Easy Recharge‘ing for Rs 98. If you do not, mind you, you’d be browsing at 30 paise / 50 Kb, because that’s the basic Mobile Office plan. The ‘Easy Recharge’ Will override this and enable your 2GB, so called ‘free’ browsing :) .

Those who do not have the required phone settings, message ALL to 543210.

After the free airtel internet service for cell phones in India seems to have stopped working, I guess this is the best option you can select!

IE Bug Might Have Led to Google Hack: Microsoft

Google was recently the victim of a hacking attack that was presumed to have originated in China. In the aftermath, Google declared that it was no longer willing to censor its search results in the country. However, as the Chinese government is extremely stringent about the webpages that are accessible to the populace, this could mean that Google would have to pull out their operations from China.

Microsoft has recently stated that a defect in the Internet Explorer allowed the hackers to gain access to Google’s systems. Mike Reavey, the director of Microsoft’s Security Response Center, wrote: “Based upon our investigations, we have determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks against Google and possibly other corporate networks.”

“Microsoft has not seen widespread customer impact, rather only targeted and limited attacks exploiting IE 6 at this time,” Reavey said. “Our teams are currently working to develop an update and we will take appropriate action to protect customers when the update has met the quality bar for broad distribution. That may include releasing the update out of band.”

Banned in China: what the regime doesn't want its people to see

Google’s threat yesterday to stop censoring search results on its Google.cn site raises the question of just what the regime is censoring. As we reported yesterday, China has increasingly sophisticated tools – known as the ‘Golden Shield’ or the ‘Great Firewall of China’ – available to monitor and limit web traffic. The sites that are blocked vary over time but there are some common themes.

Banned in China: a picture showing a protestor in Tiananmen Square in 1989
Banned in China: a picture showing a protestor in Tiananmen Square in 1989

Photos

Certain images are blocked for Chinese internet users. Usually the pictures show protests and they are often quite graphic. Images of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 are blocked, for example, as are images of protests in Tibet and pictures of Falun Gong members who have been tortured by the regime.

Search terms
Many search keywords are blocked in China. Searches for “Falun Gong”, “Free Tibet” and “Tiananmen” are routinely cut off. Searches for terms such as “Democracy” and “Human rights” will also fail to deliver results. Google.cn would display the following message for such searches: “According to local laws, regulations and policies, part of the searching result is not shown.”

ISPs
Internet service providers in China routinely limit the sites that their customers can access so as not to be found liable for their conduct. Politically sensitive messages are often deleted from forums by moderators employed by the ISPs.

Western websites
Websites are regularly blocked for a period of time and later unblocked when the regime relents. The New York Times, Wikipedia, the BBC and Amnesty International are just some of the sites that have been blocked at one time or another. Last year it was reported that many social media sites, including Twitter and Facebook, were being blocked by the Chinese government. Apple’s music store, iTunes, was blocked during the 2008 Olympics after more than 40 athletes downloaded a pro-Tibet album.

iPhone applications
At the end of last year it was reported that several iPhone and iPod Touch applications relating to the Dalai Lama had been removed from the Chinese version of the iTunes App Store. Apps including Dalai Lama Quotes and the Dalai Lama Prayerwheel are not available to Chinese iPhone users. Apple said: “We continue to comply with local laws”.

There is much more that is blocked by the Great Firewall of China. However, the good news is that it is a fairly trivial matter to circumvent the censorship and doing so is widely tolerated. Nevertheless, by making it inconvenient to access controversial material the Chinese regime is still keeping many of its 360 million internet users in the dark.
